Moisturisers are an important addition to any skincare routine and it is essential to find one that suits your skin type. Whether you have oily, dry, sensitive or combination skin, everyone needs a staple and reliable daily moisturiser to bring back hydration and nourish the skin. Moisturisers work by providing the skin with water for hydration, that penetrates cell membranes to plump up and rehydrate the top layers of your skin. They also contain a form of wax, grease or oil, that traps the water in the skin so you can have prolonged hydration and benefits.
Factors that cause dry skin:
Dry skin may be genetic. Your face naturally produces sebum, a type of oil, that can vary in amount from person to person. It can help retain water and leave your skin smooth, however too much is what causes blemishes and acne.
Environmental factors such as pollution, low humidity, hot showers, and heating or air-con systems can dry out your skin. These factors strip away natural protective oils, allowing moisture to escape from the skin.
Dry skin can also be due to skin diseases such as eczema and psoriasis.
What to look for in your moisturiser:
Your daily moisturiser should include sunscreen, to ensure you have sun protection without an extra step. Sunscreen use can help protect your skin from UVA and UVB ray damage, which can encourage dryness and cause premature or increased signs of aging. Our Urban Multi Defence Moisturiser with SPF15 is ideal for protecting and nourishing delicate skin every day.
Look for moisturisers with saturated fatty acids, rather than monounsaturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Polyunsaturated fatty acids go rancid the quickest and cause oxidative damage to the skin (aging).
Your skin type will determine the type of moisturiser best suited for you. Oily skin is paired best with a light product to prevent further oil production. BondiChic’s Blue Mountains Spring Water Hydrating Mist with Kakadu Plum is perfect for using throughout the day for a boost of hydration and glow for your skin. Drier skin can handle thicker creams and lotions for intense hydration, such as our REJUVEN8 Cream for daily use and our Envi Hydrating Moisturiser for night use, which can double as an overnight face mask for deep hydration and restoration.
What to avoid in your moisturiser?
Silicones and petroleum in your skincare will give you the illusion of hydrated skin, however, are not providing your skin with moisture or any other benefits. They can trap oil, dead skin and dirt in your pores and encourage acne and even dehydration.
Avoiding moisturisers with synthetic ingredients or fragrances can improve the dryness of your skin. Fragrance is the number one cause of skin irritation and allergic reactions in cosmetics products, which is why BondiChic doesn’t include any fragrances or alcohols in our skincare products!
We recommend applying your moisturiser after a shower when your skin is still damp, or at the conclusion of your skincare routine to lock in moisture and prevent dryness.
